Seizure Symptoms
Primary generalized seizures: the different types of primary generalized seizures cause different symptoms:
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizure (also called grand mal seizure). In this type of seizure, the person usually becomes unconscious and falls to the floor. All muscles of the body may contract once in a sustained contraction or may contract in a series of rhythmic contractions shorter, or a combination thereof. Some patients also lose control of bowels or bladder. The seizure usually lasts less than a minute and is followed by a period of lethargy (sluggishness, slowness) and confusion, possibly with muscle pain and headache.
- Absence seizure (also called seizure “petit mal” or petit mal). In this type of seizure, loss of consciousness is so brief that the person generally does not change its position. For a few seconds, the person may have a blank stare or rapid blinking. This type of seizure usually begins in childhood or early adolescence. (more…)
A seizure is a sudden change in the electrical activity of the brain. During a seizure, brain cells “activate” uncontrollably sometimes up to four times its normal rate, that temporarily affects the way a person behaves, moves, thinks or feels.
