If anal itch becomes a chronic problem, the skin around the anus may be sensitive and get irritated due to continuous scratching, or be thickened and rough. Continuous scratching can also hurt the anal skin and cause painful local infections.
Diagnosis
To help identify the cause of anal itching, your doctor may ask you to describe your diet and medications that are currently taking, your habits and how to routinely clean your anal area after defecation. Review your medical history, including history of rectal problems (hemorrhoids, fissures or fistulas) or skin problems (psoriasis, eczema or seborrhea). After completing the questions, your doctor will perform a physical examination of anal area and sometimes, a rectal exam. If you have a history of skin symptoms involving other parts of the body, also want to examine those areas of the skin.
If your anal itch is due to local irritation of the anal area, usually a doctor can diagnose the problem as its background, diet and personal hygiene routine with the results of physical examination. Sometimes we ask for a stool sample if you suspect a worm or parasite infection. Rarely, your doctor should examine the area to introduce a special viewing instrument called an anoscope. This may help your doctor determine if the itching is not due to a problem inside the rectum.
