Treatment

In most cases, the anal itch can be treated in the following ways:
- Meticulous but gently dry the anal area after defecation. Use unscented toilet paper, towel or a hair dryer, as needed.
- Sprinkle the anal area with talcum powder between a non-medicinal use and other disposal, or put a clean cotton swab into the anus, which absorb excess moisture.
- Resist the urge to scratch, regardless of the intensity of itching in the area. The itching will disappear, or at least diminish its intensity in a short time but the more you scratch, the longer it takes to disappear.
- Apply topical hydrocortisone creams like zinc oxide or (1 percent) regularly or as needed, to prevent scratching.
- Wear soft cotton gloves while in bed if scratching at night or while asleep.

When To Call a Professional

If your own treatment for anal itching is relieved after three to four weeks, call your doctor.

Forecast

The prognosis is excellent because most people who have itching in the anal area do not have diseases affecting the anus or rectum. Overall, about 90 percent of patients feel relief when they avoid scratching.
