Preparation
Your colon and rectum need to be empty for the procedure. Your doctor will give instructions on the use of laxatives and / or enemas. Will tell you that diet should eat.
How it is carried out
You should remove your clothing and wear a hospital gown. You will lie on a table and insert a tube into the rectum and placed a barium enema. As the liquid passes your intestines may feel some discomfort. While holding the liquid inside your intestines, radiologists take a series of radiographs. To allow the barium liquid is distributed by all the intestines, you must change the position on the table.
At the end of radiographs should go to the bathroom to empty their bowels. So I take more x-rays, after introduce air into the rectum. This air, with the barium remaining in the intestines even has help to improve the images of their intestinal mucosa.
Track
A radiologist will review x-rays and give the results to your doctor.
To remove the remaining barium fluid still remains in your intestines, your doctor will ask you to drink water or take a laxative. You can have clear stools for several days.
