Anal Itching Treatment

Treatment

In most cases, the anal itch can be treated in the following ways:
- Meticulous but gently dry the anal area after defecation. Use unscented toilet paper, towel or a hair dryer, as needed.
- Sprinkle the anal area with talcum powder between a non-medicinal use and other disposal, or put a clean cotton swab into the anus, which absorb excess moisture.
- Resist the urge to scratch, regardless of the intensity of itching in the area. The itching will disappear, or at least diminish its intensity in a short time but the more you scratch, the longer it takes to disappear. (more…)

The duration of anal itching depends on the cause. If itch is due to a simple irritation of the skin, usually the problem disappears quickly once it identifies the source of irritation and is avoided. In most cases, simple treatment measures provide relief within a week and cure the problem completely in a month.

Symptoms

Anal itching in a feeling of irritation around the anus that is relieved temporarily by scratching. The problem is often worse at night and can interfere with sleep. In most cases, skin reddening of the affected area.

If anal itch becomes a chronic problem, the skin around the anus may be sensitive and get irritated due to continuous scratching, or be thickened and rough. Continuous scratching can also hurt the anal skin and cause painful local infections. (more…)

Anal Itching Conditions

Less often, anal itch is a symptom of a disease or condition that affects only the anal area or other areas of the gastrointestinal tract or skin. Some examples include:

- Local conditions and diseases that affect the lower digestive tract: These include hemorrhoids, skin tags, rectal fistulas, rectal fissures and, rarely, anorectal cancer.

- Infections and parasites: These include pinworms (especially in children), scabies, pediculosis, condyloma acuminata and skin infections due to Candida or ringworm. (more…)

Anal Itching

Anal itching, also called pruritus ani, is a sensation of itching and irritation around the anus. Anal itching is a symptom, not a disease and can have several causes. In most cases, the person with anal itch is not a disease of the anus or the rectum. However, the sensation of itching is a sign that one or more of the following factors have irritated the skin of the area:

- Fecal matter in the skin around the anal opening: the anal area if not properly cleaned after defecation, may be a small amount of stool in the skin. This causes itching. Less commonly, liquid stool can seep through the opening of the anus and cause itching. Sometimes this happens in healthy people whose diets include large amounts of liquid. (more…)
