The Treatment of Infectious Conjunctivitis
How is conjunctivitis treated?
Bacterial Conjunctivitis
It is usually treated with antiseptics, or broad-spectrum antibiotic eye drops or ointment.
In addition, the crusts should be removed by washing and secretions eye swab boiled water (cold) or eye wash solutions.
Research indicates that 64% of bacterial conjunctivitis resolve spontaneously without treatment in 5 days, but antibiotic treatment increases the cure rate and shortens the duration of the process.Viral conjunctivitis
There is no effective treatment for adenoviral conjunctivitis.
Lubricating ointments are often used to relieve discomfort and can be used in broad-spectrum antibiotic drops or ointment to prevent secondary bacterial superinfection.
They are very contagious, what is needed to observe strict hygiene rules, as for washing hands and face.
When the cause is a herpes-virus (including varicella-zoster) do need a specific antiviral treatment.
In any case, conjunctivitis eye drops should not be used steroids, unless made under the supervision of an appropriate specialist.
Chlamydial conjunctivitis
Treatment consists of tetracycline ointment and tablets, to prevent the infection from spreading.
In children, tetracyclines may not be used, so commonly used erythromycin.
Because of the risks of infection of other mucous membranes, you must pay attention to other non-ocular symptoms, and tell your doctor about any incident.
How is conjunctivitis diagnosed?
Conjunctivitis can usually be diagnosed by the doctor, depending on the symptoms described and the eye exam. It may be necessary for making conjunctival exudate culture. In severe or persistent, may require evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
Why should I pay special attention?
In severe or resistant to treatment, or if a vision impairment, it should communicate back to your doctor, even if you follow the treatment properly.
What can be done to avoid conjunctivitis?
Some conjunctivitis are contagious, so it is important to observe strict hygiene rules, as to wash hands and face. We should not share towels and avoid close physical contact with people with conjunctivitis.
Do not rub eyes, since it can easily spread from one eye to another.
Remove crusts and secretions by washing the eyes with cotton soaked in boiling water (cold) in saline or eyewash solution.
Throw open all the drops, once treatment ends.

Even without treatment, most of conjunctivitis improve spontaneously within weeks. With proper treatment, usually an improvement is seen within days.
